Early Maps of Oceania : dumont D’Urville’s model among German and Italian cartographers

[PHA Convened Session. Early Encounters.]
My starting point is a surprising occurrence : after 1832 and Dumont d¡¦Urville¡¦s division of Oceania into four parts ¡V Malaysia, Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia ¡V in France this model rapidly became dominant. However it would take some time before the model became established with cartographers and in Italian and German atlases, even if some of them, among the most renowned, adopted it very quickly (cf Benedetto Marzolla).
Why is it that many maps continued using the division of Oceania according to the model ¡§Malte-Brun ¡V Adrien Brue¡¨ for many years, even with variations and adjustments, before adopting the ¡§Dumont d¡¦Urville¡¨ model ?
We think that a map is the work of one or several authors, and relates to a place and a date of production as well as to a publisher, but it also relates to the expression of a knowledge construct, of networks of people and strategic and political objectives (¡§colonising geography¡¨, Gregory). From all these points I shall construct a ¡§time line¡¨ which will allow me to establish correlations, implications (or not, in some cases) and oppositions in order to establish some elements towards a response or at least some analytical objectives. My ¡§time line¡¨ will extend, in parallel and comparatively, between 1810 and 1890 :
„h the development of maps of Oceania produced in Italy and in Germany during this period with the description of the ¡§racial¡¨ models used for each of them (I shall omit redundant re-issues) ;
„h the historical and political biographies of the cartographers of this period and the relationships of these biographies to their maps ;
„h the geographical, historical and political development in Europe during this period.
The atlases for which these maps are generally the ¡§crowning achievement¡¨ will not be overlooked in order that we can find the implicit divisions made in some of these. From this point I shall be able to conduct my inquiry into this ¡§slow¡¨ evolution towards Dumont d¡¦Urville¡¦s model of a part of the maps of Oceania produced in Italy and in Germany during this period (and conversely), as well as the positioning of these cartographers in relation to that model
